The purpose of this annual contest, named in honor of Willamette Writer's founder, Kay Snow, is to help writers reach professional goals in writing in a broad array of categories.

Entry Dates

Beginning Date: November 1, 2011

Postmark Deadline: April 23rd, 2012

Category Guidelines

Adult Fiction - maximum 2500 words. One complete short story (or novel excerpt; excerpt can be any part of the novel) on any subject intended for an adult audience. (Double space)

Adult Non-Fiction - maximum 2500 words. One complete article for an adult market. (Double space)

Poetry - Two complete poems may be submitted as one entry, any subject or form. Maximum length five pages for total entry. (Single space, except double-spaced between stanzas.)

Juvenile Short Story, Novel excerpt or Article - Fiction or Non-Fiction - Maximum length 1500 words, written by adults for juvenile readers. State target age group below the title. (Double space)

Screenwriting - Maximum length (10) pages. Complete or partial script, any subject, in script format. (One side only, on 8.5 x 11 inch white paper using a 12 point Courier font.)

Student Writer (18 or under) - There are three categories of student writers. Students can enter any type of writing, fiction, non-fiction, poetry. Word limit, 1,500 words. Students should not enter adult categories unless paying the adult fee. If a student enters an adult category, do not put student or a grade category on the entry form.

Grades 1-5

Grades 6-8

Grades 9-12

Students are limited to ONE entry. There is no fee for student writers in these three grade groups. Students should not enter adult categories unless paying the adult fee. If a student enters an adult category, they should not put student or a grade category on the entry form.

Fee per entry is $10 per entry for members of Willamette Writers and $15 per entry for non-members. Student entries are free. Note: Contest fees are not refundable.

Awards: Adult categories: 1st place $300, 2nd place $15, 3rd place $50

            Student categories: 1st place $50, 2nd place $20, 3rd place $10
